Its ok to C-R-A-S-H, really!

I finally took the plunge. Or should I say, I finally crashed? I sure did. I made my first ever Pioneer Woman Cooks recipe. Hot Crash Potatoes. I'm in potato heaven. Nice and salty, nice and crispy, and flavored with a bit of rosemary, salt flakes, and freshly ground pepper!

When I was making them, Grumpy comes into the kitchen (I am always so apprehensive when he comes in the kitchen to ask questions). First words out of his mouth were, "what stinks?" LMBO. Oh, as I sit here typing this, I'm busting out laughing. I wish I could have a recorded session of his and my conversations. You may think we were Edith and Archie. Well maybe not Edith (I'm not THAT much of a yes person!). We certainly aren't Pioneer Woman and Marlboro Man! Yeah. Grumpy is Archie Bunker to a T! My response was very truthful but simple. "Rosemary." I'm past "explaining" to that man. If he doesn't like it, then he doesn't have to eat it! You would be so proud because I didn't even smirk when I responded. he he. I'm also thinking that Marlboro Man wouldn't act like Grumpy when came into the kitchen. I highly doubt he would ask what that stink is.....unless maybe he forgot to take out the trash that morning. ;) I'm thinking he just sweeps Pioneer Woman off her feet for making him something fabulous to eat.

Grumpy did eat those potatoes and there was only one left on the cooking pan when I went to the kitchen to clean up. So, he did like them. Thank you very much! Chris liked them too. I can always count on my Christopher to tell me when something is good. Heck, I can even count on my Christopher to tell his mommy she is beautiful! I just wish Grumpy would think of that. Oh, I guess he does.....once and a while. Just like Archie Bunker would and give this horrible grimace as he's doing it because it is killing him to be nice.

So, what are you waiting for?! Oh. My. Goodness!! Need I really say more?! You really need to get up and go make some. Right now!

Pioneer Woman's Hot Crash Potatoes - HoneyB's Style

  • Boil about 15 salt potatoes (washed of course first) with a generous amount of salt until fork tender. Drain.

  • Place on well greased cookie sheet (I like to use olive oil, but I was out so I used canola oil)

  • This is the fun part. Grab your potato masher. Hopefully it is one that looks like Pioneer Woman's (Mine doesn't - mine is a pampered chef one full of little holes instead).

  • Mash potatoes. Turn masher in other direction and mash again. Make sure they look good and mashed. Or should that be crashed?

  • Season with flake sea salt - crumble salt between your fingers to break flakes up into smaller pieces (or use regular salt). Grind some fresh peppercorns over top of this. Sprinkle some dried rosemary into the palm of one hand, and with the other hand, crumble it between your fingers to crush it and release its "stink" as Grumpy called it. Or, be like Pioneer Woman and use fresh rosemary. I didn't have any fresh, or I would have used it! Sprinkle with more olive oil (or canola oil, or any other oil you choose to use). Put on the top rack of a HOT oven that is.... 450 degrees, for 20 to 25 minutes. ENJOY!

I'm going to have to give these a try. I grew up watching All in the Family reruns, so I sympathize with you.

Ohh these look great, I've been wanting to try them for a while. I have to laugh because Grumpy sounds a lot like my dh, usually it's "what's that smell?" (with a disgusted tone) that I hear though. Oh-well. Your son sounds like a sweetie :) Thanks for sharing your crash potato success!

Those look like comfort on a plate to me! Nigella Lawson has a similar recipe in, I think, her "Feast" book in which she smashes potatoes in searingly hot garlic oil. Crispy on the outside, soft and potato-ey on the inside. What's not to love about the potato?

The Grumpy attitude and ingratitude would get tiresome fast but you don't seem to mind it.

thanks everyone. yes, my son is a sweetheart.

anonymous - he's not constantly grumpy, but its just his nature like its my nature to be happy and full of energy every morning. when you love someone you can get over the "bad" things :)

p.s. nobody is perfect, not even me! :D

I actually met one of the original 7 Malboro men. We shot on his farm/ranch outside of Durango, CO. His family made the crew lunch and it was outstanding.

These look not only fun but I just love potatoes with that salt/herb crustiness.

Not only are they good, but certainly fun to make as well. I might try this for one of my cooking classes this fall.
